Travelling to Tartu
Please take the time to plan your travels, choosing the most environmentally friendly options and compensating for your environmental impact whenever possible.
Direct Flight to Tartu
Tartu has a direct flight connection to Helsinki, operated by Finnair. Tickets are available on the airline’s website. The route operates every day except Saturday, with two flights per day. Tartu Airport is located about 10 km from the city centre. More information can be found on the Tartu airport website.
Via Tallinn
The main international airport is located in the capital, Tallinn, with direct flights from most major European cities. Information on airlines and flight schedules is available on the Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport website.
You can also reach Estonia by ferry. There are regular connections from both Stockholm and Helsinki to Tallinn. Tallink Silja Line operates routes from both Helsinki and Stockholm, while Viking Line and Eckerö Line offer connections from Helsinki only.
Travel from Tallinn to Tartu
From Tallinn Airport, we recommend taking the frequent Lux Express bus to Tartu (departure from Tallinn Airport). The travel time is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Buses operate between 7:00 AM and 11:30 PM, departing every 30–60 minutes. Tickets should be purchased in advance, and there is no need to print them — simply show the QR code on your smartphone. The bus stop is located on the city side of the airport terminal (follow directions on site).
If you prefer to travel to the city centre or Tallinn Coach Station, the tram conveniently connects the airport to the city.
The nearby Ülemiste train stop also offers train connections to Tartu. Tickets can be purchased up to one week in advance at elron.pilet.ee (with a discount) or directly on the train. We recommend choosing express departures, which have a travel time of about 2 hours. Please note that only first-class tickets guarantee a fixed seat. Tickets do not need to be printed — you can show the barcode on your smartphone.
Due to the ongoing railway electrification project between Tallinn and Tartu, train schedules may be subject to change, especially when planning ahead. Please always check the available connections before purchasing your ticket, as trains may occasionally be cancelled or replaced by buses, which can increase travel time.
From the Tallinn ferry terminal, it is also possible to continue to Tartu by train. The main railway station (Tallinn – Balti Jaam) is located about 25 minutes’ walking distance from the terminal.
Via Riga
There is also the possibility of travelling to Tartu via Riga. Riga is the main hub of AirBaltic and thus offers flights to many European cities and tickets can be bought from their website.
There is a direct bus from Riga airport to Tartu once a day and one train connection from Riga railway station per day.
Ask more arrival information from the organizers by sending an e-mail to mobiletartu@ut.ee.
